Hawaiian Hoary Bat, Twilight Program

July 24th, 6 pm - 8 pm

Known as the ‘Ope‘ape‘a, the Hawaiian Hoary Bat is the only native, flying land mammal and is currently endangered. To help our community learn more about the bat?s significance, two USGS experts will share their research and goals to preserve the species. USGS conducts acoustic surveys for bat activity and expect to see an increase at NMF this summer andfall. During these months, the bats return to lowland areas with their young and begin a new mating season.

Frank Bonacorroso, PhD, has been a wildlife biologist with the USGS at the Pacific Island Ecosystems
Research Center (PIERC) since 2004. He is the project leader for research concerning the population trends and conservation status of the endangered Hawaiian hoary bat on the Big Island.

  • Painting on watercolor paper and canvas – Seascapes, underwater scenes, fish and aquatic mammals, landscapes, still-life plants & foliage, horses and other animals
  • Pottery wheel and hand building with air-dry clay – sculptural motifs and pots
  • Woodworking projects using Koa and Mango wood
  • Mosaics using beach glass, shells, glass tiles, recycled materials, found objects, river rocks and driftwood
  • Mask Making - Casting of children’s faces using plaster gauze and then decorating with paint
  • Mono prints and making your own egg tempera paints

Summer Solstice Celebration Guided Hike

June 20th, 2009, 4 p.m. - 6 p.m.

Celebrate the coming of Summer with a guided hike along NMF lands and brand new Trail! The approximate 4-mile hike begins at the office on ‘Iole Road. The route follows the Upland Loop trail, through macadamia nut orchards and along Norfolk pines.

From the top of the Loop, we’ll venture into the Bond Forest.

Moderate Hike: 4 miles

Uphill climbing and uneven terrain

Children over 8 years old are welcome to accompany adults along the trail.

Potluck

6:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.

Enjoy a community potluck, and bring your favorite dish to share.

Fourth Annual Spring Equinox Hike

Join us for the Fourth Annual Spring Equinox Hike at New Moon Foundation in Kapaau. This year we’ll be exploring the sloping pastures and old cane trails on our way to the blue Pacific. John Gardner, accompanied by NMF staff, will lead the 90 minute hike down to a special cliff area for that perfect picture of the Kahola Lighthouse. Hop in the van for an optional ride back to NMF. Meditation & Poetry Weekend with Amida Buddhist Teachers

January 24-25, 2009

Internationally renowned authors and teachers Dharmavidya and Prasada (David and Caroline Brazier) led this special two-day workshop at Halawa House. Through meditation and creative dialogue, they explored the connection between spiritual practice and the art of poetry. A close group of people gathered to welcome the couple from the UK and will look forward to their return in future years. Download a flyer for more information.

Heroine's Camp - The Journey Begins (postponed)

December 18th (9- 3 p.m.)

For girls ages 11-13 this program will teach an overall way of being in nature. Arrive at the NMF administrative offices to complete land access forms as needed. Lunch is included.

Public Hike with the Kona Hiking Club

Roger Knoblauch will lead the hike along the Pali Akamoa Gulch Trail (1.2 mile) and the Upland Loop Trail (3-miles). Bring a sack lunch and picnic above NMF Administrative offices after the hike. Stay after lunch to walk along the Wainaia Gulch Trail (2-miles).

Family Star Gazing & Meteor Shower Event

Meet Amateur Astronomy Club to view the spectacular summer sky above NMF land. Astronomers will point out the falling Perseids Meteors (nicknamed shooting stars), Andromeda Galaxy, the Pleiades, and the Great Orion Nebula through their telescopes. Bring your reclining lawn chairs, blankets, and a warm drink. Limited tent camping available after 3 p.m. by reservation (for $15) on Saturday. Sorry, no cooking allowed. This is an alcohol-free event. Children over age 7 welcome. Continental breakfast served at sunrise. Download a flyer to this event.

3rd Annual Kohala Archaeology Update

3rd Annual Kohala Archaeology Update with Dr. Michael Graves (Professor and Chair of the Department of Anthropology at the University of New Mexico), Dr. Mark McCoy (assistant Professor in the Department of Anthropology at the San Jose State University) and Dr. Julie Field. Slideshow Presentation on field school research conducted on ancient taro systems in Kohala’s eastern gulches. Question and Answer Period to follow.

Public Hike along Pali Akamoa Gulch Trail

Encounter layers of Kohala's history and beauty along the recently reclaimed and enhanced Pali Akamoa Gulch Trail. Led by NMF staff member Bill Cook, this hike includes brief steep elevation while entering and exiting the gulch. See ancient Hawaiian agricultural areas, a Hawaiian agricultural heiau (temple) location and a sugar plantation-era Portguese bread oven along the way. It is recommended that hikers wear long sleeves and closed shoes.

Join us on the first Saturday of Spring for a hike to celebrate the coming of the new season. The moderate 3 mile mauka walk along New Moon Foundation’s Upland Loop Trail will be guided by NMF staff member Bill Cook.

Along the way participants will enjoy views of the Kohala coast and a variety of landscapes including Norfolk Pines, Macadamia Nut Orchards and the edge of the Bond Forest. Near the top of the trail we will stop for a snack and short meditation to welcome Spring. We suggest bringing a hat, sun screen, insect repellent and water bottle.

In 2001, the United Nations adopted a resolution (55/282) declaring 21 September of each year as the International Day of Peace. On April 19, 2007, Governor Lingle signed legislation declaring September 21, 2007 as Peace Day in Hawai`i. New Moon Foundation is honored to join with others world-wide in celebration of this auspicious intention for peace.

There is no fee for this program.

Teachers: David and Caroline Brazier have been developing and teaching Buddhist approaches to psychotherapy at their center in the United Kingdom since 1991. Their published books include David's Zen Therapy (1996, Wiley) and The Feeling Buddha (1998, Palgrave) and Caroline's Buddhism on the Couch (2003, Ulysses.) Their latest books Who Loves Dies Well and The Other Buddhism are being published this Summer by O-Books. They are both ordained members of the Amida Order and have many years of experience as practising psychotherapists. Topic: This workshop will include theoretical inputs, practical exercises, group interaction and will be suitable for anyone working in therapeutic or related fields. "TALK & WALK: UNCOVERING THE HISTORY OF NORTH KOHALA."

Join us at the New Moon Foundation Contemplative Education Center (CEC), site of the former Kohala Girls' School, on Saturday, 14 July 2007, for a presentation of recent archaeological findings followed by a guided hike of Pali Akamoa Gulch. The Public is Warmly Invited to Attend. There is No Fee for this Event.

Archaeology Presentation: The National Science Foundation has funded a multi-year research project in ethnohistory. In cooperation with the Research Experience for Undergraduates program, the project brings young people from around the nation to Kohala to learn about Hawaiian culture, history, and archaeology. This year, the research has been focused on the lo`i systems of Halawa Gulch and the former Bond Estate, the current site of New Moon Foundation. The presentation of their research findings this summer will be held at the CEC Chapel Room beginning at 1:00 PM.

Pali Akamoa Gulch Trail Hike: This timeless trail has been recently uncovered at NMF by Dr. Richard Stevens (UH West Hawaii). With a historian's careful eye and a passion for the land, Richard Stevens is spearheading NMF's efforts to uncover ancient Hawaiian trails and enhance the natural pathways of its land. Richard brings to life the continuing story of North Kohala as he points out significant areas which on this trail include a Portuguese Oven and what may have been an agricultural heiau. The hike will begin at 2:30 PM outside the CEC Chapel Room, pass along the back side of the CEC, enter the Pali Akamoa Gulch near Kalahikiola Church, and end back up at the Father Bond Homestead and New Moon Foundation office area. This easy-to-moderate hike lasts approximately 1 1/2 hours.

PROMOTION ANNOUNCEMENT

New Moon Foundation is pleased to announce the promotion of Robin Mullin to the position of acting Director of Operations. Robin brings over 15 years of experience in management to her new position. Her last corporate position, from 1997-2000, was as National Support Services Manager for Kia Motors America.  She has taught leadership and management courses at Chapman University, Orange County, CA, while also maintaining an active consulting business focusing on customized training and staff development programs for small businesses. Robin earned her Masters Degree in Organizational Leadership and is passionate about creating environments where people who work together also learn and grow as people, and have some fun in the process. Robin, along with her husband Harry and daughter Alissa, moved to North Kohala in 2005 following a calling to integrate more balance and beauty into their lives.  Robin also has two older sons in college who delight in golf.  In Hawai`i, like everywhere she has lived, Robin is an active volunteer in community and non-profit efforts. She looks forward to continuing to learn more about her new home, and to sharing her joy and expertise at New Moon Foundation. Please join us in welcoming Robin Mullin to her new position!

GUIDED HISTORIC WALK OF IOLE AHUPUA`A

March 24, 9AM-1PM, on New Moon Foundation's Sweet Water Land

New Moon Foundation, together with North Kohala Parks and Recreation Department and Professor Richard Stevens welcome you to participate in a historic walk of the 'Iole Ahupua'a'. This hike will focus on the mauka (mountain-side) historical, geographical and agricultual assets.

Our group will meet at the parking lot of the Bond Homestead within the Historic District promptly at 9:00 AM. Directions are on this website. Please go to "About Us" and scroll down to "Directions". Be sure to wear breathable fabric, long sleeves and pants, and rain gear, as we will be changing elevations and climate zones, and we are still in the rainy season. Also please be sure to bring water and snacks for the trail. Some parts of this hike will be strenuous. If you would like to make a bamboo walking stick, please arrive one hour early (8:00 AM). A cut bamboo pole is available as a gift from New Moon. If you would like to structure a handle or personalize your stick, materials are available for a $10 fee (or you could bring your own materials). There is no fee for the hike. LAMA WANGDOR RIMPOCHE

Dzogchen Transmission of Garab Dorje's ' Three Words which Strike to the Heart.'April 7th & 8th, 10AM - 5PM, at New Moon Foundation's Contemplative Education Center Lama Wangdor Rimpoche is a Tibetan Buddhist monk who through decades of meditation, retreats and practices achieved the state which Buddhists call realization and is respected worldwide as a venerable teacher and a master of Direct Mind Perception (Dzogchen). He has taught and given empowerments around the world. This will be the last time Rimpoche will be coming to Hawaii. Registration is required. Sessions will be held on Saturday and Sunday from 10AM-Noon and 2:30-5PM. A donation of $100 is requested for all four sessions. Donations are on a sliding scale and everyone is invited to attend regardless of donation amount. It is appropriate to make an offering to Rimpoche, with a separate offering to the translator. INAUGURATION OF THE AMIDA ISLAND PROJECT AND AMIDA BUDDHISM PRACTICE

Through an association between Amida Trust and New Moon Foundation, a center for Pureland Buddhist practice has been established on the Sweet Water lands on the Big Island of Hawai'i. Dharmavidya Brazier, Head of the Amida Order from the United Kingdom, will arrive in Hawaii in August, 2006, to offer a series of teachings and lectures to the public. In anticipation of his arrival, members of the Amida community have established a center for weekly services. THE KOHALA FIRST YEAR SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS FOR 2006-2007

The Kohala First Year Scholarship offers financial assistance with tuition, fees, books and supplies, and meals, as well as on-campus housing costs and miscellaneous personal expenses incurred during the first year of attendance at the University of Hawai'i at Hilo.The current value of this scholarship is up to $12,102.00 per student. The recipients of The Kohala First Year Scholarship for the academic year 2006-2007 are Tina Galan, Renee Gironella, Timothy Holschuh, and Braxton Rocha. With thoughtful and heartfelt participation from our Executive Directors, partners and friends; the Planning Commission approved our education center designs wholeheartedly. We are now able to move forward with the confidence that the county and our community stand behind us in our mission to create a very special center for land stewardship, community building, healing encounters, and environmental education.
